First Presbyterian Cemetery, Asbury

Located at the end of School Street in Asbury, Franklin Township, Warren County, NJ, this cemetery began as a family or local burial ground before officially becoming the First Presbyterian Church Cemetery around 1868. The earliest recorded burials are from the Creveling family. Beulah Gangware transcribed most of the existing tombstones on September 9, 1938.

This cemetery has gone by several names over the years. It’s known as Blair Academy Cemetery, Blair Cemetery, Blairstown Cemetery and Gravel Hill Cemetery. This transcription was created by Beulah Gangaware in 1934 when she inventoried the visible gravestones and do not contain individuals buried past that date.

Union Brick Cemetery

Union Brick Cemetery is located north of Union Brick Road, on the west side of Heller Hill Road, between Hope and Blairstown in Warren County. These inscriptions were copied and checked by members of the Genealogical Society of New Jersey on a Tombstone Hunt in July of 1962. The inscriptions have been consolidated into family groups.

This alphabetical list of gravestones was copied by the General William Maxwell Chapter No. 71, D.A.R., Belvedere, NJ, in June 1935. Some notes by Esther Read Doyle are included in parenthesis. Any names with asterisks (*) were amended by Bob Lanterman in 2000. Finally, corrections were submitted by Harry Smith in 2003.

This cemetery was also known by the name of Old Market Street Cemetery. Located at the original Wesley Chapel site on Delaware and Market Streets in Belvidere, this burying ground’s inscriptions were copied in February 1978 by Virginia Alleman Brown. Brown’s work, compared with Roseberry’s “Warren County Cemetery Inscriptions,” includes bracketed inscriptions from stones present in 1934 but missing in 1978.
